Not ventilating a bathroom can cause moisture to build up on the walls and windows, allowing mold to grow and possibly even get into the walls and cause the wood to rot.

While some people think that they can just use a bathroom window to vent the moisture, an open window typically won’t adequately remove the condensation buildup that results from bathing. And so, regardless of whether you have a bathroom window, you will need to use the exhaust fan.

How long should the bathroom fan run for?

The fan should be turned on 20 to 30 minutes before you plan to bathe, during the time it takes for a bath or shower, and continue to operate for a minimum of 30 minutes after to completely remove excess humidity. This will keep mold, mildew and rot at bay.

Remember to keep your fan clean and in good working order. People tend to be a little lax on cleaning fans, but they can get clogged, which inhibits air flow. Regularly annual cleaning can ensure they continue to work properly and efficiently.
