Simple preventative measures throughout the year can keep your concrete driveway looking new and lasting longer. In this video, our Broadview Homes service technician, Barclay Ross, explains what causes cracks in your driveway and what is normal for concrete in Calgary.

One of the best ways to prevent cracking, chipping and spalling of your driveway is to seal it. Before applying the sealer, your driveway needs to be cleaned and allowed to dry for 24 hours for best results. Barclay also demonstrates how to apply a sealer, what tools you’ll need and discusses how often to seal your driveway for optimum protection.

Another way to prevent damage is with proper winter care. As soon as it is possible after a snowfall, it is best to shovel snow off your driveway with a plastic shovel. If ice is a problem, avoid salt and deicer products which will damage your driveway, and instead use sand or gravel for traction. Ensuring that your downspouts are properly positioned will also eliminate some build-up problems and help prevent ice from forming on your driveway.
