With open spaces, walking trails, and gathering places, those who live here will enjoy an abundance of opportunities to meet their neighbours and build lasting relationships.

For those times when you just want to get out of your house and do something, fortunately, there’s plenty of things to do close-by.  Check out these kid-friendly options for local fun.

1. Have Some Fun At The Symons Valley Ranch Market

Symons Valley Ranch is a short drive away, and it offers plenty of fun for the whole family. In the summer, they have a community garden, which is an excellent way to grow fresh fruits and vegetables your kids will want to eat. Sign up early if you want to participate, as the spots sell out quickly. Their annual winter festival in January is also fun. Year-round, you’ll be able to shop from unique vendors in their small vendor mall and enjoy a meal at the restaurant.

2. Get Fit At Orangetheory Fitness

If you’re looking for a new way to get fit, check out the Orangetheory Fitness centre, located in the Creekside Shopping Centre. It was founded on the idea that when you optimize your heart rate during an exercise, you’ll continue to burn calories long after the workout is over. The workouts are 60 minutes long, and you get a special heart rate monitor that keeps track of how hard you’re working out. During the workout, you’ll alternate between cardiovascular activities and weight training activities, giving your body a full workout in a short period of time.

3. Save Money At CrossIron Mills

At the CrossIron Mills Outlet Mall, you’re able to get great deals on all of your favourite brands in over 1.4 million square feet of shopping space. Pick up something for the kids at the Disney Store, something for your husband at the Bass Pro Shop, and a little something for yourself at Godiva when the day’s shopping is done. While a day of shopping can be tough on the little ones, you’ll be happy to know you can stop for a play break at the dinosaur-themed children’s play centre.

There’s nothing quite like sitting down to a good book. Whether you’re looking for picture books to read to your toddler at bed time, graphic novels to encourage a reluctant reader, or stacks of the latest young adult novels, you’ll find what you’re looking for at the Country Hill Library . The local library is a part of the Calgary system, so you can borrow books from all across the area. It has a children’s room and regular programs catering to the needs of the community. Stop in to see their schedule and find things of interest to your family.

5. Take The Kids To The Park

Evanston features a wide variety of green spaces, walking trails, bike paths and even a neighbourhood play space that features equipment appealing to kids of all ages. After some time in the playground, you can head over to any of Evanston’s open areas with a soccer ball and have a picnic.

6. Get Together With Friends At Pour

Part pub, part restaurant, POUR could be the perfect spot for a family outing (kids are welcome until 8pm) or for date nights. The menu features a variety of favourites, including large salads, specialty burgers, and mouth-watering entrees. If you’re there for the drinks, you’ll be pleased with the large selection of beer and wine. Try one of the beer cocktails, like the ‘Black Forest Cake,’ which mixes Dunkelweisen and Fruitess. POUR occasionally has special events, so be sure to look at their calendar when planning your trips.

7. Relax At The Good Earth Coffee House

Tim Horton’s might be nice for a quick cup of coffee on-the-go, but if you really want to relax and enjoy your coffee, head to the Good Earth Coffee House. From a regular cup of coffee to exotic teas to seasonal beverages, there’s a bit of everything. Consider pairing it with a little snack. All of the food is made fresh in the coffee house, and it all tastes great.

If you’re thinking about making Evanston your home, you’ll never be at a loss for things to do. Whether you’re looking for fun family outings or ways to get away from it all on your own, seek out the activities best for you.
